In Memoriam: Andrew Tarshis, PhD 1973

Seth Stiles, B.S. 1991
I have worked in environmental consulting since graduating UCSC in 1991. I've worked for five different firms in the US, Canada and the UK. Currently I'm married, living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland, for Golder Associates doing environmental consulting as a Senior Geologist. Recently my work has taken me to Romania several times. Ken Ma, B.A. Earth Sciences and Economics 2006
I currently work for East Bay Municipal Utility District as a California state certified wastewater treatment plant operator. I also work part time as an environmental scientist performing asbestos analyses at Micro Analytical Laboratories in Emeryville. Ironically, I have been analyzing many samples from UCSC sent to the lab by a private abatement contractor working for UCSC.

Philip Stauffer, Ph.D. 1999
I'm still working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, doing research on CO2 sequestration, contaminant transport, and unsaturated flow. Got married in June 2008 and am really enjoying the familiy life. House in the Jemez Mountains is a relaxing retreat from the busy life of science. Fred Phillips, B.A. 1976 and Gregory Beroza, B.S. 1982
Fred and Greg were elected Fellows of the American Geophysical Union in 2008. Election to AGU Fellowship is a very high recognition by one's peers. The number of Fellows elected may not exceed 0.1% of the membership in any given year.

Judith Totman Parrish, B.A. 1972 (Biology and Earth Sciences), M.S. 1977, Ph.D. 1979
Judy was was elected Vice President of the Geological Society of America in 2007 and became President on July 1, 2008. Judy returned to the classroom and research full time at the University of Idaho, having served as dean of the College of Science from 2003 to 2007. [Full Story]

Ian Howat, Ph.D. 2006
Ian received the AGU Young Investigator Award in Cryospheric Science in 2007 [Full Story]. Following a stint as a postdoctoral scholar (jointly appointed at the University of Washington and the University of Colorado), Ian is now an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University.

Barbara Bekins,Ph.D. 1993
I got married last year and moved to the Santa Cruz mountains. I am still working for the USGS doing research on biodegradation of contaminants in ground water. We have been looking at the factors controlling biodegradation of nitrate in agricultural settings.

Frank Perry, B.A. 1977
I am a self-employed designer and builder of natural sciences and historical exhibits from museums and park visitor centers. I am also an associate with several California museums and collect fossils for these museums. I have written eight books, the most recent being Lime Kiln Legacies: The History of the Lime Industry in Santa Cruz County, which I did with several co-authors. I have been working this past year to help set up the Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District at UCSC. We plan to restore and preserve the historic lime kilns, cooperage, and cabins at the campus entrance. I live in Santa Cruz and am married to Jill Miller Perry (M.S., 1982), and we have two grown daughters.

Connie Arthur, B.S. 1975
I am running a 100-acre equestrian center near the Central Sierra Foothills. We usually have about 60 horses here. Come by and visit.

Gail Bakker, B.S. 1985
I am currently working as a hydrologist for the U.S. Forest Service at the Tahoe National Forest. I live in Grass Valley with my husband and we enjoy cycling and hiking.

Dennis P. Davie, B.S. 1982
I am currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Santa Cruz Group, Ventana Chapter of the Sierra Club and its Forestry Task Force.

Jennie Fuller, B.S. 2000
In Portland, Oregon enjoying volcanoes, the gorge, the coast and all the other great geology up here. Working at the environmental consulting firm as staff geologist.

Brian Globerman, PhD 1985
Currently working as Systems Engineer for the Loudeye Corporation in Seattle, a business-to-business distributor of digital music and content.

Tracy Connell Hancock, M.S. 1993
Currently working as a hydrologist with the USGS Virginia Water Sciences Center. Daughter Meghan is almost eight years old.

Karen Hanson, M.S. 1994
Karen has recently been invited to University of Phoenix-Sacramento as facilitator to ground, Flex Net and online science programs.

Edmond Ken Lee, B.S. 2004
I am currently working as a geologist for a private consulting firm, GeoSystems, Inc. in Glendale, CA. This career path has been very fun and a great learning experience. I hope to get my R.G. and C.E.G. license for California in the near future.

Fred Phillips, B.A. 1976
I am still a professor of Hydrology at New Mexico Tech (Socorro, NM). I am currently heading up the CRONUS-Earth Project (Cosmic-Ray produced Nuclide Systematic on Earth Project), and international effort to improve cosmogenic-nuclide geochronology. I received the Kirk Bryan award for Research Excellence from the Quaternary Geology and Geomophology Division of the GSA at the 2005 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City.

Leonard Thompson, B.S. 1994
Been working as a jazz pianist for the past 10 years.
